Though not featured in the book but still part of the “MITACA” series, Jeep in Jungle is an image taken in the mountains of Colombia to the east of the small town of Salento.
Many jeeps passed on this long, steep ascent up the mud roads that slinked along mountainsides. The machines groaned in low gear and the passengers stared and smiled curiously at the gringo as he slowly churned his bicycle wheels through the wet earth. This oncoming jeep parked far ahead, and as the driver walked in front he suddenly stopped and watched. When I was close we looked at each other and with no expression he nodded and so did I. He walked away, and in the silent moment that followed I took this picture.
