Part of the “MITACA” series, this image featured in the book is of the whimsical tree named the Wax Palm.
La Palma is a photo that features one of the many indigenous Wax Palm trees of the Cocora Valley region near Salento, Colombia. Though they may look like something from a Dr. Seuss book, these palms are real and are actually quite resilient as they prove to be one of the only trees to be able to withstand the challenging growing conditions of the Paramo- a high alpine growing region of Colombia above 10,000 ft. Though they normally grow near to each other like thin hair on a mountain side, this particular tree stands alone, high above a decrepit road that guided my descent from the remote La Linea mountain pass.
All photos in the MITACA series are taken by me from my bike during my solo journey through the country of Colombia.
